AN ARITCLE FROM BANGALORE MIRROR
Director Yograj Bhat became the laughing stock in his village Tilavalli (Hanagal taluk) six years ago. This followed his experiment to generate electricity from the pressure of vehicles moving on the road. The result of the experiment was not enough to convince the villagers and everyone branded him an eccentric dreamer. Life moved on and Yograj Bhat became a successful film director in Kannada. But the experiment he conducted stayed on in his mind and he could not believe that he failed to implement it.
Finally in his new film ‘Manasaare’ he makes the lead actor conduct a similar experiment, in which, needless to say, he fails. While Yograj Bhat has all but given up the idea of generating electricity from roads, confining it to his film alone, he heard the news about the government of Sikkim implementing a similar idea on a trial basis. “It feels ironic. I had put a team together and was about to implement a practical model. At the last moment, a venture capitalist who had backed the project vanished. The villagers thought I was trying to fool them. Now, I hear that the governments of Sikkim and Uttar Pradesh are planning to implement the idea that was developed by IISc. I know, my idea was developed independently and perhaps before them. However, it is just a scene in my film now. I do not intend to claim anything from it, but just to make myself realise not to give up any project midway,” he says.
Bhat’s original device was to place metal rods across the length of a road for a distance of one furlong. The pressure of vehicles moving on the road would depress another length of metal rod running parallel to the road. That would in turn pull chains that would rotate a turbine to produce electricity. “Drivers would not feel anything different. The pressure applied is very minimum, but that would be enough to generate electricity,” Bhat recalls about his old experiment. He says he is not sorry about losing out. “We all get such ideas. Most of us do not even attempt to materialise them. At least I tried,” he says.
